HMS Winchelsea

HMS Winchelsea, 1:700 by Mike McCabe

This model shows the W class destroyer HMS Winchelsea as converted to a Long Range Escort.  This involved removing one of the boilers and therefore the fore funnel as well, as endurance rather than speed was the important factor for escort duties.  A hedgehog anti-submarine weapon replaced one of the guns, and torpedo tubes were replaced by more depth charge stowage and AA armament.

The model is based on the Tamiya HMS Vampire kit, the conversion needed some changes to the bridge area, removal of items as above and addition of depth charge throwers, 12 pdr gun, a new pom pom platform and a number of other minor details.  All in all a simple conversion finished off in the classic Western Approaches scheme, suitably weathered.
