The model shows a scene inspired by a photo I saw when researching and
is of the Hog Islander Comol Cuba in the Hudson River during the 1930's.
All the kits are 1:700 from Battlefleet models, the Hog Islander itself is
adapted to show a fit as a molasses carrier, although typically more information
came to light after completion showing I had missed some modifications. In
any case, I added the additional levels onto the bridge, the catwalk over the
after deck and additional details as required. The little tug and garbage
lighter both were detailed with parts from the photoetched box and the ever
present gulls following the no doubt smelly lighter are from cigarette paper.
I had to guess at the colour scheme as I wasn't able to find any information on
the company running Comol Cuba at the time other that it was registered in
Panama.
For the backdrop I too an image from the internet, printed it out on A3 sized
paper and attached it to a backboard.
Battlefleet produces some nice, sharp resin kits of merchant and naval auxiliary
subjects which are perfect for diorama settings, I already have a few ideas in
mind for other subjects in their line!
