SS Yewdale by Mike McCabe, 1:700 Fine Waterline kit
The model shows the British coaster SS Yewdale as she would have been
in 1940 when she was commandeered to take supplies to the BEF at Dunkirk.
With a Royal Navy crew she carried a cargo of cased petrol to the beaches, where
many of these small ships were beached directly onto the sand to be unloaded.
Returning from her second crossing Yewdale was bombed and sunk just off La
Panne.
I used our Fine Waterline model from the coasters set, I built an open bridge
with plastic card and etched ladder for the windows. Masts are from BMK
and the ratlines Atlantic models. Other details such as winches, vents and
boats are from Battlefleet models, I made the tarpaulin from cigarette paper.
This may be one of the last models I paint in enamel, although superstructure
colour Humbrol 63 sand, was such a perfect match for the colour scheme of the
time worn by many such small merchants I think I would have to use it again.
I'm very pleased with how this little model turned out, I think she captures the
look of these hard working little ships very well.
