HMS Sutton is made from the Finewaterline kit mastered by Roy Allen. She is
depicted in 1942 so there were some modifications to make to the kit. A pair of
12 pounder guns were scratch built and some extra superstructure added as well
as a couple of 20mm Oerlikons and an acoustic hammer on the bows.
The IWM has a fine set of photos of this ship (although only one of the set
appears on their online selection) which were used to make the modifications.
The camouflage colours used were 507a, 507c and MS4a. I can’t be certain of the
authenticity, but this combination of colours was in use at this time. In 1942
she was part of the 4th Minesweeping Flotilla employed on sweeping off the East
Coast of England.
I am really pleased that Roy has produced this kit (and other minesweepers in
the future I hope) of a hard worked class of ships as there is a tendency to
only model the glamorous units. Even better that he has made such a good job of
it with an excellent parts breakdown which allows the superstructure to be
painted before fitting to the main deck, thus avoiding the need for any masking
at this point.
