HMAS Yarra

HMAS Yarra, 1:700 scale from the Fine Waterline kit by Mike McCabe.

The Royal Australian Navy purchased four slightly modified Grimsby class sloops of which Yarra was one.  At the start of the Second World War she served in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf before the entry of Japan into the war brought her closer to home.  During that battle of the Java Sea, Yarra was escorting a convoy when she ran into three japanese heavy cruisers.  After laying a smoke screen to try and protect the convoy, she turned to face the overwhelming odds but was lost after a short and hopeless battle.  For a fuller story of Yarra see the Diggerhistory pages.
